Intimate Curves Define Trongyee’s New Shantou Store

AD Architecture designed the new location of womenswear boutique Trongyee to be a timeless symphony of soft curves and mellow tones. Here chief designer and studio founder Xie Peihe tells us more about the project

Design Anthology : How did you first meet the client?

Xie Peihe: Four years ago, the founder of TRONGYEE_FASHIONS, asked us to design a store for her sub-brand TRONGYEE. When it came time for a second store, she asked us again.

What was the brief to you for the project?

The store is the brand’s first in a mall, so it needed to suit the context. The 280-square-metre store is on the second floor of The Mixc, a high-end shopping mall in Shantou, in China’s Guangdong province.

How did you approach the project — what design narrative did you try to incorporate into the space?

We began by looking at art installation design and modern aesthetics. We wanted to convey both the artistic and aesthetic qualities of the brand by breaking conventions and creating unique shapes that make for an intriguing yet inviting visual effect, one that contrasts with the neighbouring stores to draw passers-by in.

For the material and colour palettes, we incorporated delicate elements that are softer and more comfortable, and focused on tactile textures like the paint finish and carpet.

Do you have a favourite element or design detail in the interiors?

I really like the rich spatial layers in the space. The curved surfaces evoke the folds of silky fabric, inviting exploration and surprise.
