A Modular Jewellery Store in Chengdu

Chengdu-based ATMOSPHERE Architects designed jewellery store KVK’s new Chengdu retail space by combining a futuristic modular scheme with a bold design language. Here studio founder Tommy Yu talks us through the project

Design Anthology: What was the client’s brief to you for the project?

Tommy Yu: The project is in Chengdu’s central business district, just steps away from Taikoo Li, so we created an eye-catching shop front to take advantage of the high-traffic location. From the facade to the interior space, we combined a modular design concept with KVK's brand identity to create a unique retail space.

How did you approach the project — what design references or narrative did you try to incorporate into the space?

The core brand concept of KVK is the artistic philosophy of reconstruction. To match this idea, we created a space that’s flexible and easy to reorganise thanks to adaptable modules.

Please tell us a little about the material choices for the space.

To align with the store’s design concept, we chose cool materials with a mirror effect, such as glass, silver mirror and fibre-reinforced plastic (FRP). We also used wood veneer, resin, frosted acrylic and other materials with a warmer texture to bring some balance to the space.

Please tell us about some of the custom pieces for the space.

Most of the structures and pieces in the space were custom made, including the glass modules at the door, the spider-shaped art installations on either side of the main entrance, the frame structure of the ceiling, the display system and the light-emitting booth.

Do you have a favourite element or design detail in the interiors?

The wall-mounted product display system is a favourite element. It functions as both a product display area and lighting. When the drawers are pulled out, the light turns on immediately.

Another highlight is the shop faced. Our team worked together on the details and it’s the result of multiple experiments by our material, lighting and construction partners.
