From the editor

I recently stumbled upon a short piece of prose from Marcus Aurelius’s Meditations: ‘All things are in a process of change. You yourself are subject to constant alteration and gradual decay. So too is the whole universe.’

This made me reflect on the idea of homes. We’ve seen a wave of extensions, renovations, alterations and refurbishments in the last few years as we’ve all become intimately in tune with our living spaces, and those who can invest in making them more comfortable and customised to individual lifestyles have been busy doing just that.

In this issue of Design Anthology, we’ve brought together five unique homes: an archetypal Melbourne industrial conversion by Rob Kennon, the calm quietude of a remodelled 60s home by Robert Davidov for his sister’s family, a church conversion in Sydney’s Paddington by Tom Mark Henry, a new build for a young family on the Gold Coast by Shane Denman, and a mountain retreat in New Zealand’s Southern Alps by Anna Carin. Each of these homes speaks not only to the designer or architect’s philosophy and aesthetic, but also to the homeowners’ personalities and their evolving lives.

Creating spaces for everyday life, as well as designing around change and obsolescence, comes up again in the interview with the founders of Sydney-based Other Architects, a duo who are working across timeframes (and time zones), geographies and typologies.

The remaining pages of this issue are, as always, dedicated to showcasing some of the most inspiring people, products, art and architecture across Australia and New Zealand.

We hope you enjoy!
