Sebastian Herkner Collaborates with Rakumba
The launch of Sebastian Herkner’s lighting collection for Rakumba marks the award-winning German designer’s first collaboration with an Australian brand
German designer Sebastian Herkner is known for his passion for traditional craftsmanship, impeccable sense for materials, colours and textures, and intuitive and balanced approach. Since founding his Offenbach-based studio in 2006, he’s honed a delicate balance between quality and function, and tradition and innovation.
Herkner has long been fascinated by the tactile and interactive nature of glass, and his collaboration with Melbourne lighting brand Rakumba offered the opportunity for him to bring to life what he described as a ‘decorative yet functional collection that is both sophisticated and simple’.
Metropol is a modular design that takes a single lamp as its starting point, based on the natural botanical patterns and curves of a trifoliate. But for Herkner, what’s exceptional about the design is that there are many possibilities for arrangements, ‘from a minimal wall version to a pendant, to the iconic grandeur of the chandelier setting.’
According to Rakumba’s head of design Dan Treacy, “Metropol’s strength is in its quiet charisma. Its design is one of intricacy and sophistication. Rather than overpowering a space, it leaves room for the architecture to stand out, making it a particularly versatile lighting collection.’
