A New Members-Only Whisky Club in Hong Kong

Monte Carlo Whisky Club is an intriguingly refined space that references its namesake’s yachting culture

Monte Carlo Whisky Club is a recent addition to bustling Causeway Bay’s roster of drinking and dining spots. Designed by local firm M.R. Studio, the sophisticated private member’s club takes the form of a contemporary bar with vintage details.

The layered, texturally rich space is inspired by the boats moored along Monte Carlo’s scenic coast, with yachting motifs incorporated throughout. A steering wheel welcomes members at the entrance and panels mimicking those used in boatbuilding surround the lounge. Timber flooring, metal mesh, a feature wall, brass and glass make up a refined materials palette, while furniture in velvet and leather gives the space a classic, vintage feel.

At just under 150 square metres, the club houses a bar (no doubt the heart of the club), lounge, game area and outdoor rooftop terrace. The M.R. Studio team artfully negotiated challenges like the space’s irregular triangle shape and low ceilings by hanging antique mirrors above the bar area within a boat-like skeleton structure to create the illusion of space, and designed the ample outdoor terrace to bring the outside in — not to mention that if already offers spectacular views of the city.
