A Family Retreat in Hong Kong
Designed by local studio hoo, this family-friendly seaside home is an elegant mid-century affair with intriguing touches throughout
Founded by YC Chen, Hong-Kong based design studio hoo is dedicated to creating unique homes that become like sanctuaries for their inhabitants, and this recent home project in Hong Kong is no different.
Starting out, Chen’s clients had one simple request: ‘a beautiful and elegant home with something to look at in each area.’ Everything else was left to Chen and his team, and since they were unable to alter the layout, they played with colours and materials to transform the 145-square-metre space into what Chen describes as a ‘elegant mid-century, British-style home’.
Defying conventional ideas about dark shades shrinking spaces, Chen selected a rich, dark wood laminate for flooring to complement the cream wall panel moulding, which combines with ambient lighting to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere that is enhanced in the living room by an oak mid-century dining set from Carl Hansen & Søn.
Bedroom walls are a reflection of each family member’s personality: pink flamingo wallpaper for the daughter, walls covered in navy trees for the son and dashes of mature burgundy for the parents. In the two bathrooms, contemporary touches come in the form of grey terrazzo tiles, neon yellow grouting and geometric tiles. The living room balcony and large windows in each room mean the family can retreat to their cosy, intimate space and still enjoy views of the greenery and ocean outside.
