We speak to Chinese-American designer Robert Kuo about his work’s heritage and future

Chinese-born, USA-based designer and craftsman Robert Kuo has arguably played a significant part in the revival of the Western appreciation for traditional Chinese crafts and form. His eponymous collection is instantly recognisable due to its twist on scale and stylised Chinese motifs. Moreover, few other designers are able to express a modern sentiment while displaying such respect for traditional forms, techniques and materials. It is this marriage of traditional craft with modernity that makes Kuo’s work so appealing.

This year marks Kuo’s 30th anniversary, which will be celebrated by retrospective exhibitions of his work at both his Los Angeles and New York showrooms. To mark the occasion, Design Anthology spoke with Kuo about his life and work.
